Become an elementary school teacher and make a difference in the lives of future generations with our Multiple Subject Teaching Credential program. This program equips you to become a teacher, guiding a group of students throughout the day in all subjects. With one additional course, you can add a Bilingual Authorization in Spanish or Hmong.


Our program focuses on preparing teachers for diverse classroom experiences and emphasizes social justice and equity in all aspects of learning. Our Mission Statement

The Teaching Credentials Branch prepares teachers and leaders to be agents of change, committed to social justice, equity, and inclusion in culturally and linguistically diverse schools and communities.

Our Vision

Our vision is to be the regional leader in preparing and developing excellent teachers. In collaboration with our schools and communities, teachers prepared at Sacramento State create and sustain equitable, inclusive educational environments that are designed to optimize access and student success.

  • Complete your credential coursework within the first academic year as a 2-semester candidate. Afterward, you can return within seven years to pursue the Master of Arts in Teaching. This additional phase involves one summer session plus two semesters to attain your MAT degree."

If you start the program in the fall as a graduate student (having already completed your BA/BS degree), all application materials are submitted through Cal State Apply.

The application period for starting the Master of Arts with Teaching Credential Programs opened on October 1st and will close on February 1st.

Financial Support For Your Credential

We understand that financing your education is an important consideration, and we are committed to assisting you in finding financial support. We believe that finances should not be a barrier to your passion for becoming an educator, and we encourage you to utilize these resources to help fund your teaching credential. Complete your FAFSA. Teacher credentialing candidates should indicate they are 5th year undergraduate students on their FAFSA. Consider applying for the TEACH grant.

For DACA and Undocu- students, complete the CA Dream Act application. DACA and Undocu- studentsMaster of Arts in Teaching with a Multiple Subject Credential (1) are not eligible for federal aid, but ARE eligible for CA state aid. Students are eligible for the AB 540 CA Grant. Indicate you are a 5th year undergraduate student. If you have resided in CA for over 1 year and 1 day, you may indicate you are CA resident. FAFSA vs CA Dream Act apply to the correct financial aid in CA.

In 1 year, become a “Day One” ready teacher while getting paid to earn your credential. Residents may receive $40,000 in scholarship to pay for tuition, books, etc. and support in applying for additional grants up to $20,000.

We need Bilingual Teachers!

In California, over 2.3 million TK-12 students come from households where languages other than English are spoken. Unfortunately, a shortage of qualified bilingual teachers in the state means that these students often miss out on a quality bilingual education. To bridge this gap, addressing the need for bilingual educators is crucial. Here at Sacramento State, we offer a Bilingual Authorization in the following languages:

  • Spanish
  • Hmong

The Multiple Subject Teaching Credential allows you to teach any subject (including art) in a self-contained classroom like those we are all familiar with in elementary school. Multiple subject teachers can also act as a team teacher or serve in a core teaching setting.
